A GLOBAL NETWORK DRIVING MIGRATION RESEARCH & POLICY
Since 1995, Metropolis International has connected researchers, policymakers, and practitioners worldwide to explore migration's impact on cities and societies. From a small research initiative to a global leader in migration dialogue, our journey continues to shape policy and practice.
KEY MILESTONES
1995: A Collaborative Beginning
Metropolis International was founded as a comparative research initiative on migration’s effects on cities, uniting partners from over 15 countries, including Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Australia. The Migration Policy Group (MPG) became its European branch with support from the European Commission and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
1996: The International Metropolis Project
Launched by Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (then CIC) and SSHRC, the project created a global network to foster migration research, policy innovation, and knowledge-sharing.
1996-2008: Growth & Influence
Established Metropolis Europe at the University of Amsterdam.
Hosted annual international and national conferences.
Formed five Centres of Excellence across 20 Canadian universities.
Launched the Metropolis Institute and public policy dialogues.
2008-2009: Expanding to North America & Asia-Pacific
Metropolis North America was created through partnerships in Mexico, Canada, and the U.S.
Metropolis Asia-Pacific emerged with collaborators from the Philippines, South Korea, and China.
2012: A New Home at Carleton University
Metropolis International moved from IRCC to Carleton University and introduced Professional Development (MPD) training for migration policymakers and practitioners.
2012-2020: A Global Platform
The network expanded further, hosting the International Metropolis Conference, producing policy briefs, and increasing engagement in Africa and Latin America.
2024: Incorporation & Strategic Partnership with Toronto Metropolitan University
Metropolis International incorporates as a not-for-profit organization in Canada, and partners with Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), headed by Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration, Anna Triandafyllidou
2025: A New Vision for the Future
With a formal Board of Directors and International Advisory Council, Metropolis International continues to shape global migration research and policy with a renewed mission and vision.
