The Asia Research Institute invites applications from ambitious scholars to conduct cutting-edge academic humanities or social sciences research on Asia. The Migration and Mobilities cluster was formerly known as the Asian Migration Cluster. In 2025, the name of the cluster was formally expanded to encapsulate the wider range of migration and mobilities research that has come to characterize its work. The Migration and Mobilities cluster maintains research interests in a broad range of human migrations, transnational mobilities and interconnectivities within and beyond Asia

For this year, the cluster will focus on two priority research themes: The first research theme highlights the organization and constitution of transnational (im)mobility as a means of (re)conceptualizing different mobile practices, rhythms and rationalities that characterize people on the move in Asia. On-going interests focus on labour migration brokerage, migration infrastructures, young people’s educational mobilities, and the ageing-migration nexus. The second research theme examines the nexus between transnational migration, health and wellbeing, giving special consideration to how migrants and non-migrants mutually constitute experiences and practices in domains such as ageing, care work, food (in)security, and heat management.
