Metropolis International Co-Chair Anna Triandafyllidou Leads Migration Workshop in South Africa
In February, Metropolis International co-chair Anna Triandafyllidou, alongside the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS), hosted an insightful two-day workshop titled Navigating Uncertainty: The Future of Migration and Inequality in a Changing World. Held in South Africa, the event gathered global migration researchers to explore critical issues surrounding migration governance, inequality, and mobility amid increasing global uncertainties.
The workshop was led by Anna Triandafyllidou, Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), along with Igor Grossmann, Professor of Psychology at the University of Waterloo, and Faisal Garba, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Cape Town. The discussions delved into the role of technology in helping migrants navigate life-altering decisions and overcome structural challenges.
“Migration is not simply about borders and policies; it’s about the personal journey of migrants, finding opportunities while navigating barriers. Technology is integral to this process,”
Scholars engaged in deep discussions on how economic, political, and environmental disruptions are reshaping migration patterns globally. Key sessions covered topics such as the impact of climate change on displacement, the evolving role of international institutions, and the intersection of migration and economic inequality. The event encouraged cross-disciplinary exchange, with participants offering diverse insights and research findings.
The workshop highlighted the importance of international academic collaboration in addressing the complexities of migration in a time of uncertainty. The discussions and findings will continue to inform Metropolis International’s ongoing research and engagement efforts.
This event was part of a prestigious six-week fellowship for Professors Triandafyllidou and Grossmann, focusing on the future of human mobility and migration. The fellowship provided an opportunity for advanced exploration of how digital technologies shape migration decisions. STIAS fellowships bring together leading scholars to engage in high-level interdisciplinary research on global challenges, and Anna’s work at TMU is fostering lasting academic partnerships to advance the global migration dialogue.
