From November 14 to 17, 2024, Kuala Lumpur hosted the 27th International Metropolis Conference, marking a significant milestone as the first time the event was held in the Southeast Asia region. Themed "Migration Futures: Evolving Challenges in a Digital Age. 

The conference brought together over a hundred global migration experts, policymakers, and researchers from more than 15 countries.

Key Highlights:

Graduate Workshop: The conference commenced with a Graduate Workshop featuring 21 emerging scholars presenting their research under the mentorship of esteemed professors, fostering networking and academic growth.

Thematic Sessions: Over three days, participants engaged in sessions covering:

  • Inclusivity and Sustainability​

  • Urban Politics and Shared Spaces​

  • Refugees: Challenges and Future Options​

  • Managing Migration Systems​

  • Host and Settler Community Relations​

Roundtable Discussion: The event concluded with a roundtable featuring NGOs, academia, UNHCR, IOM, and refugee community leaders, discussing practical strategies for contemporary migration challenges. ​

Organized by the Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), in collaboration with Metropolis International, the Selangor State Government, and UKMShape, the conference underscored the importance of inclusive migration policies in our digital era.
