Reflecting on the 2025 Metropolis International Summit

On October 2–3, 2025, the Metropolis International Summit brought together 200 participants from around the world, both in person in Toronto and online. Co-hosted with the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration (CERC Migration) at Toronto Metropolitan University, the event convened leaders from civil society, government, international organizations, and academia for two days of dynamic discussion on the most pressing issues in migration today.

Participants explored themes such as solidarity cities, diaspora finance, and the growing role of advanced digital technologies in migration research and policy. These conversations showcased innovative approaches for addressing migration challenges and strengthening inclusive, informed societies.

Keynote addresses were delivered by Dr. Alejandro Portes, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Princeton University, and H.E. Amb. Amma Twum-Amoah, Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development at the African Union. Their expertise set the stage for insightful discussion and knowledge exchange throughout the Summit.

A key milestone of the 2025 Summit was the launch of Metropolis International’s renewed direction and membership model, emphasizing deeper global collaboration, ongoing engagement between members, and strengthened connections across research, policy, and practice. The network will serve as a hub for knowledge exchange, networking, and dialogue on migration.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who attended, contributing to productive conversations, new connections, and being part of the new direction for Metropolis International.
